LAUREN MAYBERRY may just be the coolest girl in town. She’s the kind of girl who dances to her own tune and wills you to grab a beer and join in. This blog post was written after I’d listened to the CHVRCHES albums (on repeat). read her recent interviews, stalked her Instagram feed and downloaded her TYCI podcasts. I hope you enjoy reading this as much as I did writing.
KEEP YOU ON MY SIDE
Mayberry is a Feminist and to her, that means achieving “social, political and economic balance between the sexes” (PASTE, Tom Lanham; Oct 2015), which she actively strives to do, namely through the feminist collective; TYCI (look it up!) which she founded a number of years ago. In fact, she still continues to edit many of the features that run on the site and in its zine. The September podcast is unmissable (not just for the stunning music choices) but also for a hilarious insight into her world namely not speaking Glaswegenially, Mean Girls and shock potato revelations. FYI: Lauren does not tolerate disrespect, so if want to keep on her side, don’t forget your manners. ‘Marry Me’ Heckler at Central Park Gig, Take Note.
Style Tip #1: ROCK A BEANIE + READ A BAD-ASS BOOK = FEMINIST
NEVER ENDING CIRCLES
You don’t need to connect the dots to figure out that Mayberry is a singer with a whole lotta love to give – whether that’s in cuddles for the residents of the Tokyo Cat Café, heartfelt tributes to her parents’ at the end of CHVRCHES gigs or in the hordes of fan letters that she responds to on a regular basis – this Scottish lassie is a definitely a girl after our own hearts. She’s a giver. She’s also got a whole lotta love for the dots and certainly rocks a good polka.
Style Tip #2: WEAR POLKADOTS + SHOW LOVE = SWEETHEART
HIGH ENOUGH TO CARRY YOU OVER
Shorts, like Superman-pants should be worn high enough to evoke that inner superhero. Mayberry clearly understands and acts upon the power of the high-waisters as she has proved on countless occasions that she won’t tolerate the haters and has silenced many with a clever retaliation. In a recent interview, she said “My band persona is 25% tougher than I am. In that moment, I can step it up.” (THE GUARDIAN, Rebecca Nicholson; Oct 2015) Never a truer word spoken.
Style Tip #3: GET HIGH + TAKE IT IN YOUR STRIDE = SUPERHERO
Lauren Mayberry is not a person that I want to define as there simply aren’t enough words to adequately describe the awesomeness of her being. But for you fellow fans, I hope that you’ve got more of an insight into the life and style of Mayberry,
